Worcester, Sept. 2. George M. Rice, president of Worcester Steel Works, says the protest of the works notes in Boston arose from Potter Lovell Company’s failure to honor them. The steel works later took care of the notes and does not expect to fail. The Potter Lovell failure may cause temporary embarrassment but not serious issues.

Fires Ravage Luton House and Cocoa Towns in Separate Blazes

A morning fire at Luton House stable in Nasawa caused $1000 in losses and burned sixteen horses worth $25,000 at Farwell's stable. Woodward's block incurred $3000 in damage. In Cocoa, a fire destroyed most of the town, including local businesses and a jewelry store, leaving residents in a panic. Portuense Foundered Near Onegada Islands

The British steamer Portuense, Captain Hews, sailing from New York August 17 for Pará and Macao, foundered near Onegada Islands in the Virgin Group of the British West Indies. Nineteen crew members are known saved. captain and several officers and crew remain missing. The vessel, 1470 tons, iron, built 1875, carried flour and general cargo valued at $100,000. It belonged to Red Cross line and had no passengers aboard from New York or Baltimore.
