National Board Urges Navy Training and Pilotage Reform

At Norfolk on September 2 the National Board of Steam Navigation adopted resolutions to urge Congress to fund training for the navy and mercantile marine, reduce reliance on foreign crews, regulate compulsory pilotage coastwise, unify pilotage rates nationwide, and standardize state laws. Farmington Man Ends Life By Self Harm and Brooklyn Sailor Killed

Isaac Miles of Farmington, 55, died by his own action Tuesday morning. James Welch of Brooklyn, crewman on the schooner Liberty at Black Rock with coal, was killed by a moving car on Tuesday at Bridgeport. He was found on the track and foul play is suspected.

August Fisheries Show Record Receipts For Gloucester

The August fishery totals in Gloucester surpassed prior months with strong Bank and Georges cod and a sharp rise in mackerel. Compared with July, Shore codfish fell while Bank codfish and Georges codfish rose, and mackerel receipts jumped over 158 percent. Compared with August of last year, total codfish reached 7.42 million pounds and total mackerel 25,035 barrels.
