New York Evening Express gains favor and readers

The New York Evening Express under Mr. Coates shows marked improvement and rising prosperity. Since he became managing editor the paper has rapidly grown in public favor and circulation, after a price cut from three to two cents, challenging Mr. Bennett's Evening Telegram as a rival.

Call for End to Indefinite Interregnum in Executive Office

The article argues the president's suspension has lingered too long and calls for Congress to convene or other action. It notes Blaine as acting head, urges relieving the secretary of state from executive duties, and warns that without a proper head the civil and military branches cannot operate legally or effectively.

Quips and curios in a rambunctious 19th century column

A miscellaneous newspaper column strings witty gibes and social observations. It references Tilden and McDonald talks, fashion trends like girls knitting hose, Boston and Maine hotel crowds, prohibition chatter, Canadian Indians organizing brass bands, and reactions to celebrities such as Clara Louise Kellogg. It notes urban proprieties, odd anecdotes about a Jersey City arrest, a bear in Idaho, a coffee joke, a poet’s verse, and comments on beauty and carriage by gender.
