The Chilean government rejects U S demands over the Valparaiso sailors murder. Egan’s cable Cites Chilean jurisdiction while promising investigation. White House officials discuss Stolm and Blaine’s possible formal demand, Yorktown heads to Chile, and London foresees likely war.
Bellefont judge argues before the Senate that removal by two thirds is improper for officials elected by the people. He cites authorities to say officials cannot be removed without impeachment or conviction. He warns the proposal to remove State Treasurer Boyer and Auditor General McCamant would startle the Commonwealth as monstrous.
In Cambridge Union Hall a massive Democratic rally drew over 8,000 people, far exceeding seating. Governor Russell, General Corcoran, and General P A Collins spoke amid enthusiastic support, praising local schools and criticizing McKinley era tariffs while contrasting lists of price increases with protestations of lower costs.
Quebec Oct 29 Premier Mercier testifies at Baie Des Chaleurs Commission naming Opposition leader Laurier in a shuffled notes scandal. He says Armstrong claim not filed with Railways, letters from Garneau and Langelier destroyed, blank notes discussed for election expenses, and notes to be equally shared. Sensation follows.
John Pepper aged 25, a Crescent Rod and Gun Club member, was killed by accidental gun discharge during the club field day near Roberts paper mill in Waltham. He crawled 200 feet to the road and died at Waltham Hospital at 10 o clock. Pepper worked at the American Watch Factory and belonged to the Waltham Cycle and Canoe clubs.
A special Boston Commercial Club train left Boston at 4 25 p m and arrived in Curiaco at 6 25 p m, taking 27 hours for the 1017 mile trip. Five minutes early, it is likely the fastest Boston to Chicago run, with spurts over a mile per minute on each line. The Boston party stays at the Grand Pacific as guests of Chicago Commercial Club. Washington Oct. 29 Brigadier General A W Greely chief signal officer in his annual report to the Secretary of War urges Congress to provide funds for regular instruction and drill of signal officers. He notes the telegraph heliograph electric flash light and telephone as vital in modern warfare and says balloon trains and powerful night signaling flashlights require funding and experimentation.
In Orange on Oct 29 a large Republican rally heard ex Governor Bracket among speakers. Bracket predicted Colowell Allen would be reelected and the State redeemed, noting strong enthusiasm and a favorable outlook for the political future.
In Dover on October 29 burglars broke into Mrs. Mary E. G. Dow’s chamber through a window, chloroformed her, and stole diamonds and jewelry valued at 5700 plus papers worth 2000. Items included an $800 solitaire diamond pin, $1400 solitaire earrings, a $1200 Patek Philippa watch, and more, along with Boston & Maine railroad stock and mileage books.
Fall River Oct 29 The Narraganset Mills striking weavers refuse to return to work and vote to stay away until Saturday when they will hold a meeting in the Weavers Association Hall. Agent Warren offers 30 to 33 cents on one class and 1944 cents on another but workers keep to higher earnings from regular print cloth weaving. The strike was not authorized by the Weavers Union.
United States Senator Jacob H. Gallinger of New Hampshire spoke at a large Republican rally in East Weymouth on Oct 29. He denounced the Democrats as unsound on silver and tariff, accusing them of opposing New England industries and favoring free trade to cheapen regional products.
In Spencer Worcester on October 29 prominent Republicans demanded charges against the Board of Assessors and the Board of Registrars for adding Democratic names to the voting list after the October 5 assessment deadline. Democrats say those men were properly assessed and recorded in note books. Town excitement mounts as the Assessors plan to meet tomorrow.
Republicans fill Town Hall in Andover to hear Curtis Guild Jr. of Boston and Charles F. Loring of Melrose. Guild argues the McKinley tariff lowered prices while Loring addresses state issues and urges Republicans to vote on election day.
A private car Grasmere attached to the fast mail on the New York Central reached Grand Central at 10 30 this morning. Onboard were Mrs J C Food Miss Jennie Flood James L Flood and Dr Nightingale family physician. They departed San Francisco at seven o clock Saturday.
Advices from Honolulu reported by the Alemela that Queen Liliuokalani is in her usual good health and may be seen riding in a carriage or on horseback on pleasant days, with daily rides noted as part of her routine.
