Taking the Indian Census Examined by Officials
Superintendent Porter of the Census Bureau met Indian Office officials to plan the 1890 census of Indians. He noted the 1880 count was unsatisfactory and said state or district supervisors would handle counts where Indians are located, while Indian Territory would get special agents. The goal is to determine exact numbers living, ages, literacy, and other simple facts, though a full tribal tally like whites is impracticable.
