Singularly Beautiful Vaughan Williams Fantasia Review
A third Symphony programme highlights Vaughan Williams Fantasia for double string orchestra as a set of free variations on an archaic Elizabethan tune. The piece evokes ancient cloistral calm and tragic beauty, with antiphonal effects and a sense of heritage shaping the modern performance. Benno Noisewitch shines in the Tcherpenin concerto, while Mozart and Liszt pieces frame the program in a brisk, earnest manner.
