London October 28 Emperor William says he alone planned the campaign behind British success in the South African War. He asserts his strategy guided the British staff and Lord Roberts to final victory.
The Kaiser, through an English intermediary, says he aided Britain in Boer War affairs and argues his plan mirrored Lord Roberts, while defending naval expansion as protection for Germany’s commerce. A storm of criticism is anticipated over his boasts.
A morning fire at 36 Savin Street spread to 38 Savin Street injuring few but prompting swift escape. Lodger John O Keefe saved Daisy Clark and Mrs Anna Clark from smoke while Patrolman Langdon and lodgers Michael Sullivan and Michael Gilmore rescued six Coffee children Bridget Mary Anna Patrick Norah Abby from the second house. Damages estimated at $1500.
A sensational development in the Hains case shows 40 letters from Mrs. Claudia L. Hains to her husband, mailed to him in San Francisco, released by counsel for Captain Hains. The letters, in diary form, were made public this morning and continued on Page 4 Third Column.
Budapest reports Countess Szechenyi formerly Gladys Van derbilt has given birth to a daughter. Earlier dispatches claimed serious illness after a stillbirth, then denial followed by her Vienna arrival with her mother Mrs Cornelius Vanderbilt for gynecological consultation. The couple wed January 22 in New York.
William T. Hickey five, son of Mr and Mrs Patrick Hickey of 1528 Beacon Brookline, was instantly killed last evening when a fast outbound car pushed him under an inbound car near Brandon Hall. His seven year old brother dragged him to safety while sister Mary alerted their parents.
The Cathedral of the Holy Cross hosts a pontifical mass to begin the Boston diocese centennial observance with high church and lay leaders present. Papal representative Mgr Falconio arrives from Washington with his secretary, followed by Bishop O Connell of the Catholic University.

A false report circulated about Captain A B Randall commanding the U S S Hannibal. The Post finds the claim that he was clubbed by a navy yard sentry false, attributing the incident to a raw recruit’s error and noting Capt Randall’s high service reputation.
Forecast calls for fair conditions Wednesday and Thursday in Boston and vicinity with possible afternoon or night showers and westerly winds becoming variable. Washington reports New England and eastern New York will see fair weather Wednesday and Thursday with increasing clouds and rain in southern portions and fresh west winds turning variable.

New York October 27 Fingy Connors at Democratic HQ declares Ohio may be Mother of Presidents but the stork will not visit Ohio this year, claiming it will fly to Nebraska instead.
William Jennings Breyan traveled 115 miles through Manhattan and Brooklyn for Marmie campaign events while sleeping two hours in two days. He delivered eight speeches from 6 to 12 o'clock with Tammany Leader Charles Murphy and met Kings County Democratic leader Senator Patrick H. McCarren at Brooklyn Bridge.
Fire at Vacuum Oil Company storage house on Long Wharf threatened a large waterfront and shipping. Firemen contained the blaze within an hour, keeping losses to about $10,000. Sixteen people from the immigration station were evacuated as a precaution though the building was spared.
Three alarms were turned in as thousands of gallons of highly inflammable oils fed a fierce blaze. Alfred Taylor, a cooper on the third floor, spotted flames near oil barrels and tried to fight the fire before fleeing. Fellow workers William Cooper John Delaney William Johnson John Donovan John Latham and John Smith escaped.
