Their naked lamp flames ignited gas causing a severe blast. More than 100 workers escaped by evening. Burt and Lamb were found dead in a sunk hole after 7 pm.
A $5,000 theft of diamonds silks laces and velvets was uncovered at Gen. Sturgis residence. Loriathe Pommard a French governess employed by Mrs. H Dousman is sought on a warrant after three trunks at the home were found filled with stolen goods. About $3,900 in diamonds and other items remain missing.
The Suffolk county democratic convention in Boston nominated Hon. Hugh J. Toland for register of deeds after a ballot that affirmed his name unanimously. Thomas McGowan was temporary chairman, later William H. Whitmore became permanent chairman as caucus notices and appointments were announced for future nominating sessions.
Marblehead crowds turn out Friday evening to honor Hon Charles P Thompson with a democratic rally. Thompson and Tarbox address 1600 supporters at Abbot Hall after a procession from Pleasant Street, praising democracy and tariff reform and criticizing Republican governance.

New York Oct 27 Lincoln Bank attached Rubber Comb & Reed factory in Bloomingdale N J in a 6000 dollar suit. The Rubber Comb company had been forced into suspension by the failure of note broker Alonzo Follet, with operations between 500000 and 600000 dollars.
The Tallapoosa arrived at the navy yard on Friday morning and will proceed to the Portsmouth navy yard to return for freight bound for the New York navy yard.
