Mackerel King Sues England Over 1899 Detention
Gloucester fisherman Captain Sol Jacobs nicknamed the mackerel king files a claim of 236000 against the British government. He says his schooner Ethel B. Jacobs was detained off the Irish coast for 14 days in August 1899 causing loss of about 500 barrels per day and seeks 100000 for false arrest. The case ties to mixed commissions handling British American claims under an established accord. He notes that his crew’s seizure occurred after he visited a dying wife and that the vessel was later lost in a storm.
