Judge frees free persons of color in habeas case
Three free persons of color who had returned to Louisiana after leaving the state were brought before Judge Canonge on a habeas corpus writ. Their counsel argued they should be released since an absence of less than two years did not revoke their state privileges. The judge ruled the argument correct and discharged the prisoners, setting a precedent for temporary departures by free persons of color.
