Philadelphia witnesses a dramatic defeat as the Athletics batter Mathewson in a single inning at Shibe Park. The Giants fade, McGraw’s hopes crumble, and New York’s ace is beaten decisive by Philadelphia’s bats, ending the game early.
In a mountain fight near Creek in Kentucky Cal McBaile, wanted for double murder at Pineville, was killed by a sheriff's posse. Deputy Sheriff Thomas was wounded and died later from injuries sustained in the confrontation.
Dr Frederick A Cook faced riotous scenes in Copenhagen as he attempted a lecture to vindicate his reputation. He fled the hall through the back door while a crowd pelted his carriage with eggs and apples on the return trip. Police were stationed at the hotel after the disturbance.
Newport Rhode Island reports Ida Levis the famed keeper of Limerock light for over fifty years died tonight. Known as the Grace Darling of America she inspired rescues and earned world renown. Elsie French Vanderbilt longtime friend visited the lighthouse today. Rev. Stanley C. Hughes conducted a prayer service in the sick room as mortar practice at Fort Adams continued nearby with 13 inch guns thundering.
Mrs Ida Lewis Wilson, known as Mrs Stricken at post, suffered apoplexy Friday night and died after remaining unconscious. Her brother, who shared the home, found her Saturday morning as physicians and nurses tried to save her life. The death ended a long habit of rising early to awaken him.
Thieves entered W. Gould Brokaw estate Nirvana at Great Neck Long Island by rowboat during the night and stole oil paintings rugs and tapestries valued over $15,000. Mr Brokaw family are overseas and the Nirvana estate had recently been leased by George H. Hune of Philadelphia.
