Market Boom in Stocks as Trading Hits Months Highs
The New York market opened strong with sympathy for London and surged through the first hour. Total volume reached 937,825 shares as prices rarely retreated, with Pacific Mail rising on control transfer to Harriman Vanderbilt interests and heavy trading in Northern Pacific. Copper stocks fluctuated but overall strength persisted, aided by sizable dividends and notable activity in Amalgamated Copper and related miners, while speculation circulated about broader gains before elections. Attempt to Form Uniform Milk Prices Across Stores
An effort yesterday to suppress milk price fights aims to set a uniform price among stores in Boston. Wall-Rice and Worcester County Creamery lowered prices from 7 to 3 and 4 to 3 cents respectively, amid pressure from a visiting advocate for storekeepers. The Milk Dealers' Association and broader public sentiment oppose monopoly, with calls for competition from independent farmers and dealers. A new contracting company is being organized to buy milk at farm prices, pay weekly, and avoid trust tactics, while not becoming a retail dealer. Samuel Page of South Boston began selling to stores at 43 cents a can, with six-cent store prices reported.
