Jack Johnson addressed a mass meeting of prominent Chicago black citizens at the Appomattox Club, asserting his right to choose his mate and denying a claim he would “get any white woman in Chicago.” He held a Bible in one hand while making his defense amid a hue and cry over his romance with Mrs. Cameron Falconer.
In a defiant speech a Black man claims he is unjustly portrayed and insists he has the same rights as a White man to select partners. He vows Christian faith and innocence to the Chicago grand jury process, while noting his brother Jack Johnson’s legal troubles. Officials announce his saloon lease will not be renewed, with Johnson retiring November 1.
London dispatch reports continued Allied successes with Servians capturing Novi Pazar and gaining near control of Kumanova. Bulgarian forces close on Adrianople from the east, with Vasilika and Titnovo occupied and a wide front under heavy combat.
On October 23 the village of South Lancaster is under quarantine and Clinton faces panic due to a smallpox outbreak that led to South Lancaster Academy closing three days earlier. Wholesale vaccination starts tomorrow in both towns.
The Columbus Day Parade Industrial Division showcased Boston’s cigar industry. A small box labeled Cigar Industry 1882 and a large Union Label box labeled Cigar Industry 1912 symbolized growth from about zero to over 1000 workers. Three new smallpox cases are linked to Lancaster academy in South Lancaster. The State Board of Health confirms active cases and many suspects among students, triggering a city quarantine and hospital precautions with 16 nurses and three patients in isolation at Clinton Hospital.
Rose Bunnis of Bridgeport and former Chicago resident was shot to death near Putney Cemetery after a car ride with four men. Suspect Joe Bunano alias Chicago Joe has confessed, citing drunkenness as his claimed motive and not knowing what he was doing.
Police investigate a Bridgeport death tied to a Chicago white slave traffic rumor. Bunano and three others, including Joseph Mattio and Frank Pizzichenni, are held on bonds as investigators trace two missing associates from Hartford and New Haven. The group allegedly transported the 28 year old woman from a Chicago restaurant to Stratford for the killing.
Mexico City Oct 23 General Felix Diaz Colonel Jose Ordaz and all officers of the rebellious troops and marines who surrendered at Vera Cruz will be hastily tried by court martial and face possible death penalty. The court will be presided over by General Beltran.
General Diaz although not now a member of the army is amenable in court under the law for civilian trials. The rebels face decimation as officers in the movement hope for clemency. The capitol shows no strong reaction as officials anticipate swift condemnations for those involved.
Gilbert G. Hunt 48, a Nahant resident and lobster fisherman, disappeared after his motor boat circled offshore between Winthrop and Bass Point with engines running. Ed win Crowell found a lobster trap aboard and a buoy, aiding a rescue search that found no sign of Hunt.
The Harvard Taft Club will hold its first demonstration of the year in Brattle Hall Cambridge with Samuel J. Elder and A. A. Berle of the class of 1891 speaking. A torchlight student procession will start at Harvard square at 7 o clock led by a band. The club counts about 1000 members at Harvard.
Reports from Oyster Bay say Colonel Roosevelt is steadily improving after examination of his wound. A late bulletin at 9 o clock tonight confirmed the improvement following initial visits from a few remaining public and private observers.
Colonel Roosevelt remains in bed but improved after returning home. Doctors Blake Brewer Lambert Fuller report healing wound. He received visitors including George W Perkins who, with Senator Dixon, leads his campaign efforts. Roosevelt sat up briefly and enjoyed three meals with Mrs Roosevelt supervising.
Nebraska Supreme Court rules six Taft electors and two Taft loyalists designated Republican on general election ballot, upholding lower court in case against Roosevelt supporters over ballot naming.
The state argues a solid case against Becker and Becker himself remains confident of freedom as the proceedings unfold. The language reflects belief in the strength of the prosecution while Becker projects self assurance regarding his prospects.
In New York on October 23 jurors prepared to hear Justice Goff’s charge at 10 30 AM as defense and prosecution clash over whether Lt Becker masterminded or merely followed the murderous plot against Herman Rosenthal. The deliberations follow three weeks of testimony, with defense and prosecutors weighing the informers and District Attorney Whitman.
On the eve of the decision Becker voiced confidence that no New York jury would send a man to the chair over a heap of crooks. He stood at the court rail as jurors filed out, softening his expression with a half smile.
