In Manila on October 23, relations between American forces and insurgents worsen as the insurgents haul down the flag and threaten clashes. Spanish officials stir trouble while traffic resumes then pauses under General Rios. The San Nicholas and McCulloch follow a gunboat order. the insurgent Mauriciq flag is hauled down by Americans. British merchants press for settlement as supplies run short and insurgents vow to seize Manila.

Four Barges Sunk West of Cornfield Light

The tug Thomas J. Scully towed barges Admiral, Camarie, Wyandotte and Atlantic four miles west of Cornfield Light when a gale broke the hawser. The Admiral leaked then collided with a second barge, sinking all four. two crew on the Admiral were lost while seven others including two women and a baby were rescued from the others. Captain Gegg searched into daylight but found no more bodies.

Rescue Efforts Fail as Irma Likely Lost Near Thrum Cap

Tugs failed to reach the stranded 232-ton Irma near Thrum Cap Shoals eight miles from Halifax after hours of effort in a heavy southwest gale. Five crew members were seen aboard. nine were aboard the Irma, raising fear four lives were lost if the hull breaks apart. The vessel, thought possibly the Irma or Ida Maud brigantine, is owned in Liverpool Nova Scotia and commanded by Captain Taylor.

Brockton Strike Continues After Massive Mass Meeting

More than 1000 shoe factory workers in Brockton, Massachusetts vote to keep the strike active. The union conference committee is tasked with pursuing a satisfactory settlement, with local supporters ready to fund the protest and Marlboro and Lynn masters expected to back them.

Building Trades Council pushes for school committee shakeup

The Building Trades Council urged removal of unfriendly school committee members and formed a union-backed campaign. A proposal to require contractors to hire only union workers was sent to Mayor Quincy for contract clauses.
