Democratic National Committee releases statement on activities of the American Independence Conference. Jeremiah O Leary reports Hughes promised not to offend by pro British references and repudiated Roosevelt.
London dispatch reports continued Teuton backed assaults in Dobrudja forcing Romanians and Russian allies to fall back from the Danube to the Black Sea. Berlin claims Toprai Sari near Constanza and Sobadin near Rachova captured as joint Austrian German Bulgarian and Turkish forces press the retreat.
War office reports clash in the Transylvania front with Berlin claiming Romanian retreat in the Buzeu valley while Bucharest disputes the claim and Petrograd offers conflicting notes on progress.
Two women fainted and several passengers were injured as car windows shattered during a riot on a Mattapan outbound car on Warren Street Roxbury. Police arrested George B Courtney 19 and John J Juosby 18 both of Milton on assault and battery charges after a scuffle sparked by seating disputes. A doctor treated the injured and women were taken home by automobile.
Perley G. Moulton a Home Savings Bank clerk was arrested at his Lynnfield home for larceny of three bonds valued at 3300 the bank as his father posted bail Moulton to be arraigned in Municipal Court this forenoon George H Brock president of the bank declined comment and police withheld details
Edwin C. Keith of Haverhill preferred a jail cell to his home, leaving a string of unsolved burglaries in Haverhill shops. Police, surprised, report Keith’s decision clears the cases for now as investigators seek other suspects.
Keith 22 confessed to a string of burglaries including Grover clothing store Nichols confectionery Crown confectionery Central cafe and De Vachio ice cream parlor He said he preferred jail to home life and is on parole from Concord reformatory Police plan to present the case to a judge tomorrow morning with charges covering multiple robberies totaling several hundred dollars.
Four people suffered cuts and bruises when the wagon they rode in was struck by a car on the Worcester road in West Boylston. The driver fled, pursued by another motorist. among the injured are Alden L. Brigham, Mrs Marie La Dardie, John La Dardie, and their infant, who is feared to have internal injuries.
Max Mitchell president Cos mopolitan Trust Company plunged into Boston harbor yesterday afternoon. He rescued a drowning man and helped another man and his wife into a motorboat after a dory overturned two miles offshore. The wife kept her husband afloat until Mitchell arrived. Nathan Gordon and Max Schoolman aided the quartet into the motorboat.
At Bayside Landing Nantasket the Carpenters of North Adams and Harry A Hewat were fishing when Carpenter slipped and Hewat sank. Mitchell and Gordon in Schoolman’s motorboat rescued Carpenter and Hewat’s companion but Hewat died. Names emerged only as the Carpenters and Hewat amid the rescue.
President Edwin P. McKnight and seven safe experts labored with an acetylene torch to crack the Medford Trust Company safe. His wife and Edna watched in shirt sleeves as police guards stood by. By 1 am the team still fought the door, recalling Saturday's robbery when a taxicab load of cash was borrowed from a Boston bank. all funds remained in the vault.
Bennington Vermont September 22 Mrs Annie Sherwood Hawks author of I Need Thee Every Hour and other hymns rests comfortably today said Dr Putnam her physician. Little change in her condition and only faint hope for recovery was expressed by the physician.
Edward C Morse former Lyndon postmaster and his wife died when their car plunged over a 15 foot embankment overturning near St Johnsbury Vermont. Three Lyndon women injured Maude Weatherbee Alice Bancroft Amelia Lee were teachers and club members. Morse 50 left a son Leslie 14.
An automobile was stolen from in front of Grace Episcopal Church in Haverhill. A second car from the church grounds was later found wrecked in a ditch in Andover with possible bloodstains. Neighbors reported seeing two girls and two men in the machine. police believe they were injured. The Turner car from Bradford district was recovered. a second car belonging to Homer R. Sargent remained missing at midnight.
Boston election commissioner Frank Seiberlich admitted a secret four person conference was held by the American Independence Conference committee. He named Charles Warren from Michigan and Charles Evans Hughes with Hughes' secretary as participants and noted discussion of Roosevelt’s hyphen denunciation and the colonel Seiberlich’s Maine speech.
Mr Seiberlich testified that a four member committee reported to a Chicago conference urging Hughes as next President. The American Independence Conference reportedly backs Hughes with 3 500 000 voters and German extraction members. The New York Hotel Astor gathering lasted about ninety minutes on a Sunday after the Detroit meeting with Hughes, his secretary Warren, Seiberlich, Schmidt, MacDonald and O Leary present. The sequence involved Schmidt contacting Warren who then liaised with the committeeman to reach Hughes. Public report of the Jamaica Plain home interview confirms the secret plan and timing.

Horton Gould 11 son of Mrs. Ralph Gould of Estes street shot his 8 year old sister Nancy with a rifle moments after receiving it as a birthday gift. Nancy in serious condition but recovery possible. Telegraph operator Edna Seavey alerted physicians after a delayed response, Dr. O P Mudge removed a bullet lodged in the forehead.
The American liner Kroonland reports Grand Banks deserted of fishermen on arrival from Liverpool. Officers say the usual fleet is absent as crews may have fled amid German submarine U-33 activity observed recently.
New York reports Charles E. Hughes rejected charges of a hidden agreement with the American Independence Conference and said he would stand for all American rights. The Democratic committee claims Hughes apologized to German sympathizers for praising Roosevelt’s Lewiston speech and objects to indifference toward British abuses by Republicans.
The committee report states Mr. Hughes sent a congratulatory wire to Colonel Roosevelt without reading the speech, only noting headlines. It cites a pledge not to follow Roosevelt but to “get after” Britain in his rhetoric. The Democratic committee also notes Jeremiah A. O Leary leading the American Independence Conference after a telegram to the President.
