Irish Members Stir Up Commons Over Irish Debate
In London Oct 22 Irish members again stirred the House of Commons with threats to withdraw from Parliament. The day’s main issue was granting a debate on the state of Ireland, leading to straw-splitting and increased ill feeling. William O'Brien and others pressed for a day, while Mr Balfour offered a vote of censure form. The Nationalists refused to vote on education bill amendments. O'Brien later demanded Roosevelt’s letter to the Boston Irish league be considered, but the Speaker ruled it out of order. A related note printed the Roosevelt letter declining attendance due to public duties.
