Roosevelt Campaign Tour Hits Newburgh and Kingston

Governor Roosevelt completed the first day of a West Virginia to Maryland speaking tour, addressing large crowds in Kingston and Newburgh. He answered hecklers with pointed replies, defended Democrats, and lambasted trusts as police and crowds urged him on through the day’s series of eight speeches across the state.

Bryan On Race Question In West Virginia Campaign

W Va October 22 On the Chesapeake railroad line through the Big Kanawha and New rivers area William Jennings Bryan spoke at Huntington Hurricane St Albans Charleston Brownstown East Bank Montgomery Sewell Thurmond and Hinton. Crowds gathered in Huntington Charleston and Hinton as Bryan urged equal rights for colored citizens while appealing to them to treat Filipinos justly. He recalled 1896 and asserted Democrats stand for right principles and Republicans for wrong ones. At East Bank he said he wants support from those who seek equal rights without special privileges if he is elected. In Sewell to coal miners he defended labor arbitration and cabinet representation for labor. A man asked about Paris peace treaty and Bryan stopped the train to explain his stance. In Thurmond he cited Governor Roosevelt on government by injunction and said it deprives workers of trial by jury.

Champion Hurled From Tricycle While Chase World Hour Record

Albert Champion of Cambridge was thrown from his motor tricycle at Readville while attempting the world hour record. He suffered a broken arm, a facial cut, and a dislocated forearm. He will be unable to use his arm for two months. the accident left the machine largely undamaged except for bent rear wheel spokes.

Blood Stains Found At Bailey House Store Room

Reporters discovered stains in the Bailey house store room they believe are blood. Dr. Fred M Stiles of Waltham tested specimens from the plank and baseboard and said the plank stain is blood and the baseboard stain likely is as well. Further tests were planned with a continuation on Page 8.

Woman dies by morphine poisoning at Park Hotel Newark

A well-dressed woman registered as Edith Barrett of New York at the Park Hotel Newark died this evening by morphine poisoning. Dr J W Reade found the body and she left a card for Augustus P Loring of Boston at 22 Congress street. Loring, a prominent lawyer, lives at 277 Marlboro street and maintains a Beverly summer home at Pride's Crossing.

Boston Inspectors nab a noted crook in whalebone theft case

Inspectors Wolf and Cleary captured a dark skinned man naming himself Dennis Kelly who admitted to John Brown. They found whalebone and satin linings at 4 Billerica street linking him to robberies in Roxbury. Brown, 24, tall, medium build with black eyes and small mustache, claims he bought the goods from a street informer. Police suspect distant city thefts and dispostion of over $1000 in whalebone while no formal complaint exists.
