Funeral for Julia Ward Howe Draws Citywide Attendance

A Boston church service at the Church of the Disciples honored Julia Ward Howe with a 2 PM funeral led by Rev. Dr. Samuel A. Eliot and staffed by Rev. William Safford Jones. Thousands of schoolchildren sang Battle Hymn of the Republic as floats of Howe’s life were read. The body arrived from Middletown Rhode Island and filled the small brick church beyond capacity.

Arizona Population Rises 66.2 Percent in 18th Census

Washington reports the 18th census shows Arizona with 204 354 residents, up 81 422 or 66.2 percent from 1900. The territory’s growth surpasses its 1890–1900 increase while Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina, also show gains in the new figures.
