Special Despatch reports Attorney General Brewster delaying release of Wells's star route report. It accuses Bob Ingersoll of joining defendants and alleges juror bribery by the defense, with criticisms of officials and accusations of a manufactured case to shield corrupt actors.
Hiram Atkins of Montpelier hosted a banquet at the Pavil ion hotel celebrating the recent Democratic win in the Buckeye state. About 125 attendees, many Republicans, shared a formal dinner with seats assigned at 10 pm and a menu marked by a democratic rooster motif.
An 19th-century banquet at the statehouse featured politicians from both parties. Guests included Lieut. Gov. Pingree, Gov. Eaton, Speaker Martin, and several senators and representatives. After-dinner exercises with speeches praised the era of good feeling and culinary service.
The Record reports Ellis P. Phipps ex superintendent of the Philadelphia almshouse fled to Canada and fights extradition. He is alleged to have stolen $659000 over nine years with a scheme to share profits with four guardians. In 1876 he spent $10000 on cigars to aid his election.
In Charlotte on October 20 W. H. Bailey a Democratic candidate for the Mecklen burg county house seat was assaulted by revenue agent A. B. Gillespie. Bailey was badly wounded with cuts to the forehead and lip from brass knuckles. Gillespie posted bail of 100 dollars for trial the next day amid rising excitement and potential further trouble.
Writ issued Friday in Toronto and returnable next week. A Brownsville despatch says cordon areas are healthy with no sickness near Camargo and Mier, which remain very bad. Miners in Myersdale Maryland strike for 30 cents per ton, with one Smith & Co. mine still operating Friday. Universalist convention in Philadelphia adopts resolutions for abolition of death penalty and liquor prohibition. Sheriff Briggs of Waupaca arrests two men for murder of H C Mead, feared lynching. Smugglers killed near San Antonio, four captured, jewelry worth $20,000 seized. Ostrander murder case in New York denied for new trial. County safe and merchant J H West and Sherith J Faure robbed of over $3,000. no clues. Chicago despatch notes East Chicago offices rented, harbor-city scheme halted. Ottawa customs releases Japanese goods to Hicks & Co of Montreal, $4,597, with 5 percent overvaluation. In Eastman Georgia on October 20 a group of five Black defendants Riddick Powell Simon Quinn Joe King Bob Donalson and Ella Moore were hanged in the jail yard for complicity in the August 6 riot during a camp meeting. An innocent white man James Howard was beaten and shot by the mob. A small armed mob response was anticipated and a Macon military detachment was present for protection.
Paterson N J Oct 20 Nine hundred workers at Dolphin Manufacturing, maker of flax carpets and bagging, are idle after a strike by part of the workforce seeking a wage reduction. Superintendent Cheyne was assaulted with sticks and stones but escaped unharmed.
Demoitr Mich Oct 20 about one sixth of the wheat crop has been thrashed with an average yield of 18 41 bushels per acre versus 12 3 in 1881. Oats run about 32 bushels per acre while corn and potatoes are described as fair. Beef cattle and sheep are also reported in fine condition.
Denheider’s bank at Zeeland in Ottawa county was burglarized Wednesday night. From 7000 to 9000 dollars in currency secured. The safe was drilled and the lock broken with no clues to the thieves.
Lieut Danenhower testifies on ice crush of the Jeannette noting 10 foot ice and small broken pieces. He says the ship was strong but forefoot twisted. continuing Arctic voyage would not have been prudent. Also reports on President’s health, navy plans, cabinet meeting, and other capital news including postal rate changes and obsequies costs.
Ply mouth plans to reopen the Blodgett Glove company spaces for a short period next week. New York, Boston and other creditors will work through the stock and close accounts. Several local labor and legal notes follow, including a fatal fall by two Lewiston masons and a series of court actions.
A trotting race for 50 dollars a side at Concord Friday featured G. Powers's br g Star Gazer versus A. C. Eaton's br s Lyon Slasher. Star Gazer won with a best time of 2 45. Lyon Slasher posted 2 44 49 in one heat. The State Teachers Association annual meeting opened in Concord Friday with large attendance. W. E. Buck of Manchester presented Supplementary Reading.
George H. Pew known as the clubber was rearraigned in Newport on a charge for assault on Clarence Janley at the Middletown fair grounds last week. He pleaded guilty and received a $20 fine plus costs. In Providence a young stranger died Thursday night after being found on a sidewalk and taken to a house. A letter from Dobble to Alexander Frazier dated Oct. 4 in Webster Mass. mentioned a $52 check sent to Frazier.
Johann Martin Schwerzler of Preston admits killing Fred Mell, with bonds raised from 1000 to 4500. Harwinton reports a skeleton found in swamp mud with a dilapidated coat and straw hat nearby. Co L Tuttle is under arrest in Danbury for fraudulently filling a 3500 check signed by J G Twining of the Waterbury Instalment company, using a blank check from Twining's wife. Waterbury National bank did not honor it.
Fred Captain a colored suspect in the A W Ross Glendale Ohio murder case says Harris was the principal killer and induced him to join the robbery. He says Harris struck Ross at the railway crossing with a stone and a club, then Captain fled. Police and Mayor Giangue note the confession but query Captain and his father, now jailed for drunkenness.
The Social Temperance union held its annual meeting and monthly banquet in Wesleyan Hall on a Friday afternoon. Rev. Dr. Hale presided in the president’s absence. officers elected for the next year include John D. Long as president and L. E. Dudley as secretary.

The National Cotton Planters' Association meeting at Little Rock Ark resolved to hold a world's centennial cotton exposition in 1884. The Massachusetts Rifle Association opened its fall meeting at Walnut Hill with five matches on Friday. A. Duffer won the single score team event and A. Matthews took the Creedmoor match as weather stayed favorable. All other matches continued into Saturday with the re entry event drawing strong attendance. Baseball results from yesterday include Mets over Buffalo 2 2, Philadelphia over Cleveland 1 1 in 12 innings, and Chicago over Providence 7 3, with several games halted by darkness.
The Post reports three men arrested on suspicion in the Cambridge highway robbery last Saturday. Police Chief Hagar swore out a warrant charging robbery and felonious assault. Judge Orcutt to hear the case with a continuance likely since key witness Charles S. Childs cannot appear. Dolan and Leonard, Boston suspects, were taken to station 2. friends deny guilt and claim alibis.
Brief telegraph reports note Thoesen Uhl on Third Avenue in New York suffered a blaze this forenoon causing about 45000 in losses. Other fires include Silver City Mills County seven houses burned, losses over 25000, and Durango Colorado worst district fire, 60 frame buildings destroyed with 25000 loss. Minor city rubbish and dwelling fires in Dorchester cause alarm and damage.
