Dr. Raymond Bonelli of 276 Hanover Street applied for a marriage license to wed Pauline Tranfaglia, a Dorchester music teacher, without her consent. Reporters informed her, and she refused to marry him.
Yesterday the woman denied engagement to the physician amid family statements she had no婚 intention to wed. Dr Bonelli said he loved her and sought a license to prove his suit, claiming he planned to tell her later and would cancel if the public learned of it. He added he filed with sincere intent and hoped the match would follow after the legally required five days.

Theodore Roosevelt's train tour to back Charles E Hughes faced snow and sleet as it arrived in Kansas City. He gave a five minute platform speech in Jefferson City Missouri recalling the Lusitania incident and declaring foreign powers wrongly doubted American resolve. William Allen White joined the train at the Kansas stop and rode with Roosevelt toward Emporia, where a brief stop was planned.
German forces mounted a violent counter attack to the north and east of Sailly-Saillisel but were repulsed by French lines. Berlin concedes British forces captured some German positions on the Sars-Morval front, later retaken. Wireless reports from Norfolk indicate the Clyde Line steamer Arapahoe, which lost a rudder off Cape Lookout, is anchored and out of danger. The storm is abating and Coast Guard cutters Seminole and Pamplico are en route to assist and expected to reach the vessel late tonight.
William Jennings Bryan spoke in Elizabethtown and other Kentucky towns for President Wilson. He praised Wilson's management of national affairs and urged re election while denouncing Republican campaign tactics as futile criticism.
Newburyport October 19 Robert C Cheney 59 of Kings Island drowned while boating with his son Robert K 23 on the Merrimac River. The pair ran a boat yard near Salisbury and went out to a large anchored power boat to bring it ashore. the son was rescued barely.
The craft boarded and crew hauled its anchor when a strong wind and rain capsized the boat throwing two men into the river. Young Cheney, unable to swim, clung to a mooring and cried for help while his father disappeared beneath rough waves. Islanders rescued the boy and recovered the father's body about 30 minutes later.
The Fifth Massachusetts Infantry is expected in Boston this afternoon or tomorrow morning. Three trains will bring companies from Medford Woburn Malden and Boston Newton Waltham and two from R Boston Hingham Hudson Plymouth Attleboro and Winthrop machine gun company. They will detrain at Huntington avenue yard, parade through streets, then proceed to home stations.
Three summer hotels and two cottages burned in Watch Hill R I tonight threatening the business district. The fires involve the New Watch Hill House Colonial Hotel and the Columbia House. Cottages owned by William C Hastines Yonkers N Y and Miss Julia Bush Troy N Y. All hotels were closed for the season.
A west wing blaze at New Watch Hill House gutted the four story wooden hotel with 150 rooms aided by a 50 mile wind. The fire spread to Hastings cottage and then to Columbia House as flames reached Bay Street. Firemen Bliven and McKone of Mystic were burned while fueling a chemical truck and needed medical care.
Edwin Ginn of Winchester, a fullback and drop-kicker on Harvard’s scrub team, was hospitalized with a mild case of infantile paralysis. His roommate Hampton Robb of Burlington, N. J. has been quarantined in the college infirmary. The varsity and scrub squads are semi quarantined but Harvard’s game versus the Massachusetts Aggies at the Stadium tomorrow will proceed.
Harvard announces the first infantile paralysis case since opening on Sept 23. Dr Lee says no other suspected cases exist, no quarantine for students yet. Over 100 students remain under semi quarantine while varsity football lists 46 players and the scrub squad 40. Ginn and Robb had close contacts with several associates in recent weeks.
About a hundred women from the National Woman's Party rallied around the Congress Hotel to display banners urging vote against President Wilson for opposing woman suffrage. The silent protest sparked a near riot as demonstrators were attacked and scattered by a hostile crowd.
A Wilson woman tore a suffrage banner with an umbrella while others shouted shame and disgrace. The disruption triggered a broader assault by Wilson women on banners and bearers, with suffragists outnumbered ten to one and defeated.

The Cunard liner Alaunia was sunk by a mine in the English Channel with four crewmen confirmed dead and the remainder rescued. All passengers, including 21 Americans from New York, were landed earlier at Falmouth before the vessel's loss on the voyage to London.
Captain H. M. Benison and most of the 250 aboard were saved with four lost. Passengers later reached Falmouth by rail and were told no London bookings were made. The Alaunia struck a mine, sank in the morning, and only a small portion of its 10 000 to 12 000 tons of cargo was discharged at Falmouth. rest to London.
