Captain J G B Adams, ex commander in chief of G A R, dies
Captain John G B Adams known as Captain Jack and longtime state House custodian died at the State House at 3 PM after angina pectoris. He had complained of chest pain, received treatment, and collapsed in Major Davis's arms. He served in the Civil War, was captured at Petersburg, and endured Libby Prison. Governor Crane ordered half mast in his honor.

Longtime Lynn resident Captain Adams served as inspector at Boston Custom House, postmaster of Lynn, deputy warden at Concord Reformatory, and sergeant-at-arms at the State House since 1886. He led G A R posts, presided over veterans groups, and carried the state electoral vote in 1868. Renowned for heroic acts at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, he survived grave wounds and remained active into 1888. He left one daughter.
