In 1835 a Washington Street mob assaulted William Lloyd Garrison as he prepared to address an abolitionist meeting. He was dragged through Wilson's Lane to State Street, jailed briefly, and later fled the city. A statue by Oliver L. Warner is now planned for Commonwealth Avenue Mall near Hotel Vendome, with unveiling deferred.

In the supreme judicial court the Taber divorce case opened with Parson Downs replying to Judge Charles Allen’s question. Downs and Mrs Taber attended with counsel A F Butterworth. Mrs Taber wore gray serge and fur trimmed cloak and a feathered bonnet. Downs testified about a room at 7 Derne street, the disturbance, and the ensuing confrontation with officers.
