Wellman Airship Rescue Told by Boston Post Reporter

J. C. Elwin, aboard the steamer Trent, recounts the Wellman America crew rescue after a 72 hour storm off Hatters Island. The airship ran into a thunderstorm, jettisoned gasoline, and was saved by the Trent’s wireless call and swift steamship response.

Airship America Rescued by Trent After Sea Drop

On October 18 the airship America carrying Walter Wellman and five companions was sighted near the steamer Trent in distress. The Trent attempted to assist as gusts swept the balloon, finally lowering lifeboats. The aeronauts dropped into the sea and were saved, treated by Dr. J. C. Cormick aboard the Trent with minor injuries to Wellman and others.
