President Taft’s southern journey culminates in San Antonio after a 21 hour trip from El Paso. A Sunday arrival drew a large cheering crowd at the station and along streets to the St. Anthony Hotel, where city officers greeted him before a cavalry escort took him to the hotel.
The President assisted in the dedication and accepted on behalf of the government a chapel erected by citizens of San Antonio at Fort Sam Houston. Tomorrow he will place the cornerstone of the nearly completed chapel, review the troops, and address the public from Alamo Plaza before returning to the city.
A custody dispute over 7-year-old Lincoln Buckley Young surfaced in a Los Angeles police court. The case links the child's parents with a former Dover businessman and his wife and a Boston coal merchant tied to a breach of promise settlement.
Albert Winslow, once prosperous in Dover New Hampshire, is identified as the man who allegedly eloped with Mrs. Young from Gloucester last April and who visited Los Angeles with her while Austin P Young fought to regain his son. Minnie Winslow remained in Dover when Winslow left town in August 1908 leaving unpaid business debts.
William I. Buchanan of Buffalo New York, once American minister to Argentina and Panama, was found dead on a London sidewalk near the American embassy. The cause is unknown and Ambassador Reid will seek a thorough investigation. Buchanan had been on a mission regarding the Venezuelan claims that have engaged U S and Britain for years.
The dead man identified as W I Buchanan, who had arrived in London on a U S government mission tied to Venezuelan claims, was found at Claridges Hotel. An inquiry will be held tomorrow as embassies and the coroner take charge, with papers of great value believed among his effects.
News from Washington reports the death of Mr. Buchanan a longtime diplomat connected with the State Department since Cleve lands era. Born September 10 1853 in Covington Ohio he served as US minister to the Argentine Republic from 1894 helping settle a border dispute with Chile. He also directed the Buffalo Pan American Exposition and in 1902 became the first US minister to Panama.
Washington Oct 17 William E Magoon former provisional governor of Cuba arrived here and rumors spread that he may be summoned to fill the diplomatic post in Pekin following Charles R Crane s removal before he could proceed to the Chinese capital.
Dr Frederick A Cook left New York for Toledo Ohio to continue lecturing but said he has nothing new on the North Pole Mt McKinley dispute. He plans to end his lecture tour this week to prepare an expedition to Mr McKinley to recover records he claims left there in 1906.
Vineyard Haven Oct 17 The naval tug Patapsco one of the two largest tugs in the navy bound from New York for Portsmouth collided with an unknown steamer in Nantucket Sound. A hole was torn in the Patapsco’s hull and, as far as known, no lives were lost.
Information from wireless messages shows S. O. S signals replacing the C. Q. D. distress call. The submarine tender Nina was sent from Newport and the revenue cutter Acushnet from Woods Hole to assist. Patapsco remained anchored west of Handkerchief in good shape from shore, but hull leaks persisted and the crew de pumped. The tug may be towed to Newport or brought to the harbor in the morning if voyage is impractical.

James O'Donnell survived a harrowing 18 hours trapped in an air chamber in the forepeak of the schooner George W. Collier after it wrecked in Chesapeake Bay. The overturned vessel kept him alive and afloat until the Virginia picked up the crew at Deals Island. The crew, including Captain Webster, later towed the ship to a yard and recovered O'Donnell as he lay barely conscious.
