We have turned away thousands of young men unable to pay our prices though eager to trade with us. To meet demand for finely crafted garments at lower prices we will open a new department led by Mr. H. B. Kendrick formerly with Fisher & Co. and in London. We invite young men who value higher quality and are willing to pay a bit more than for poor work.
The International Marine Conference delegates met at Wallach House to organize and set meeting hours. Secretary roles were assigned, and Parker's Manual adopted. Discussions focused on marine signals and vessel draughts with aims to generalize regulations for all navigable waters. The conference authorized study committees on Lights and Sound Signals and adjourned for the day.
The American Bankers Association executive council met in New York to evaluate President St John’s proposal for more silver coinage and fewer greenbacks. They adopted a report stating retirement of legal tender notes is practically impossible and warned increased silver coinage would threaten the monetary system. They preferred issuing gold certificates from the existing gold reserve if legal tender notes are retired and further paper money is considered.
President Alexander Hogeland of the Boys and Girls National Home Association told a Washington audience that some 60,000 boy tramps roam the United States. He urged a national registration to locate and place them with farmers seeking labor. The association’s work was expanded after the address.
From Cleveland reports and East broker talks indicate Thomson-Houston of Boston may buy a portion of Brush Electric stock. Final papers not signed. If completed, only stock ownership changes, not the Brush company as a whole, with a plant valued around 3 million dollars.
In St Louis on Oct 17 a prominent league member announced plans to boost membership and stabilize the Irish National League across the country. He denied ties to Clan na Gael or the Cronin murder. Father O’Reilly and Col John Atkinson went to England to meet Mr Parnell, while Charles O’Brien travels from Detroit to Lincoln to organize nationwide efforts.
Central Traffic Association managers met to consider trunk line presidents demand to abolish private stock cars across roads. The Baltimore and Ohio Wabash and Nickel Plate cited long-term contracts with car owners and could not join the plan. Decision sent back to presidents for each road to exercise discretion on private car use.
Pierre, S. D., Oct. 17. The Legislature chose United States Senators after both chambers met. In the House Pettigrew 108 to 14 for Tripp and Moody 107 to 14 for Day. In the Senate Pettigrew 41 to 4 for Tripp and Moody 41 to 4 for Day. In joint session Pettigrew and Moody, both Republicans, were declared elected and the Legislature adjourned until January.
National Board of Trade met in Louisville on October 17. Prince of Scranton presented committee findings on extension and representation, urging harbor improvements, charter limits for bridges, a naval reserve, and aid for steamship lines to foreign ports. A telegraph service to be owned by member boards was proposed but withdrawn. Torrey bankrupt bill endorsed after two hour debate. eight dissenters. A Pan American Congress coinage unit was urged. Henry Watterson closed the meeting with a banquet and remarks.
United States Circuit Court heard an application for a receiver for the bankrupt Cable & Western railroad. Joseph G. George, Walker Manufacturing Co, and Roebling’s Sons Co sought appointment as judgment creditors for all creditors. Alphonse de Figuerido named receiver as debt total $260,000 against road valued at $1,000,000.
New Haven October 17 Huntington defeats Hall in straight sets 6 2 6 3 6 3 at the New Haven lawn tennis tournament. Huntington earns a place in the final against I G Beach, who has won the cup in the two previous years.
At the American Board annual session in New York on Oct 17 the committee on Africa reported satisfactory missions but urged more workers and U S action with Germany and Britain to abolish Eastern African slavery. New officers and 26 members were elected, a nine member committee to study mission methods was created, and discussions highlighted Turkey work and finances amid debates on prudential committee conduct. Meanwhile a public sale ad lists deep discounts on menswear and coats.
At West Canaan New Hampshire the Montreal express collided with a standing freight, wrecking both engines and blocking the line. Engineer Callahan of the Hosley buried under wreckage but escaped serious injury. the other crew unhurt. Freight crew failed to signal. An additional incident reports a Hampstead freight derailing with multiple cars wrecked and one injury minor. In Texas Madden wreck on Texas and Pacific due to washout. engineer Hibble and fireman Jones killed. stake driver Mansfield also dead.
Ottawa announces a subsidy for a line of steamers between Halifax or St John and the West Indies. Sir Charles Tupper in Madrid negotiates a commercial treaty with Spain and colonies. Negotiations begun amid promise of a successful outcome. The move aims to revive Canadian West Indies trade relations.
The Juanita master, a British schooner fleet member, writes from Victoria B C to the Times arguing England must act to stop American claim to the eastern Behring Sea. He warns continued policy may let America take the entire eastern half and urges Canadians not to be driven out.
London reports a conference at Hawarden with Mr Gladstone and leaders Morley Granville Vernon Harcourt and Ripon to decide if it is opportune to reveal Home Rule details. The meeting is set for tomorrow to determine the timing and disclosure of proposals.
