Cushing Reports Peaceful Arbitration Victory and Tweed Indictments

New York reports Hon. Caleb Cushing praising the arbitration between the United States and Britain as a peaceful victory with a substantial monetary claim margin. Separately, indictments are issued against William M. Tweed and associates for conspiracy and forgery. arrest warrants issued and early attempts to arrest Tweed fail. Eugene Beath is arrested for misappropriation related to a Portland company, with bail set at 4000 dollars.

Ferrol Revolt Suppressed as 500 Rebels Captured

Madrid reports the Ferrol revolt ended with 500 rebels captured. Insurgents dispersed during a dark stormy night fearing attack. Some fled to ships at Seijo, others sheltered in the town under fire. Government troops entered the arsenal and captured about four hundred inside.

Frightful British Rail Accident Injures Twenty Four

A passenger train on the Eastern Counties Railway derailed near Kelvedon station twelve miles from Chelmsford. Ten cars plunged down an embankment, one passenger a lady was killed, and twenty three injured with several may die.

New War Tax Levy Sets Rises for Government Costs

Havana reports a decree raising taxes to cover future war expenses. It adds a 24 dollar levy on slave hires, doubles export duties and real estate war taxes, hikes banker and merchant levies, and increases imported duties from 10 to 25 percent. Effective January 1. Also notes sugar market softness, a treason conviction in Remedios, and arrivals of the steamships City of Mexico and Crescent City from New York.

Lawence Mass Woodchopper Parade and Rally at City Hall

A large enthusiastic gathering of Democrats and liberal Republicans in Lawrence Massachusetts featured a parade of woodchoppers and a rousing meeting at City Hall. Speakers included Hon. Chas Woodbury Levi and J. K. Tarbox in a special Boston Post despatch.
