Professor Hugo Munsterberg fires a sharp open letter to his Harvard colleague W E Hocking after Hocking criticized him in the press over Munsterbergs recent German chancellor letter. The exchange widens the rift in the Harvard psychology faculty amid wartime sympathies.
The letter Munsterberg wrote to Chancellor von Bethmann Hollweg, intercepted and published by the British, triggered Professor Hocking’s attack. The professor defends his two year stance on Germany and peace and rebukes Hocking for prior public remarks instead of a personal inquiry. The letter begins with note that the time is ripe.
The School Board voted to require oral language qualifying exams for new modern language teachers three years after appointment. Five teachers resigned for marriage. Promotions included John J. Connelly Jr. to junior master at East Boston High and ten temporary junior masters across city high schools. Temporary submaster John L. Mayer named for Jefferson district. Centre managers named for Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston, Roxbury, South Boston, North End, and West End. The board allotted $1000 for lectures and motion pictures in schools under the director of extended use of school buildings.
Norman Prince, the young American aviator, received the Cross of the Legion of Honor while on his deathbed in Gerardmez hospital Vosges. He had taken part in a major aerial raid and a subsequent air battle between Allied and German planes. head injuries were the apparent cause of death.
Despite wounds, the American pilot kept firing at attacking German planes and stayed aloft long enough to strafe back. He later crashed into an aerial cable while attempting to land and died unconscious. Franco American aviators and French pilots went to Gerardmer hospital to arrange the funeral. Charles Prince, an uncle, obtained a permit from General Joffre to travel there but arrived after the death.
A stone or missile shattered a rear window of the dry train observation car near Fort Wayne Indiana as Ira Landrith Prohibitionist vice president candidate traveled with the party. No injuries occurred though reports of a gunfire were considered at first. A stone was found on the platform and no bullet was located.
Massachusetts General Hospital marked the 70th anniversary of ether anesthesia by opening its Moseley Memorial Administration Building to the public. The first ether use at MGH occurred on October 16, 1846, highlighting a milestone in medical history.
Two Back Bay graduates Robert M. Winthrop and Francis Endicott were arrested in Portsmouth New Hampshire on charges brought by sailors from the battleship Washington after an incident at the National Hotel. The men were later reported at their summer homes in Manchester and Beverly Farms with no comment from residents.
Police identify two men as Robert Mason Winthrop and Francis Munroe Endicott arriving by car on Monday Oct 9 to tour the Portsmouth navy yard and nearby areas. Bail posted with Old Colony Trust and Kidder, Peabody checks signed by Winthrop and Endicott were honored. The men reportedly own summer homes on the north shore. London reports from October 16 that Vienna and Berlin confirm continued fighting on the Transylvania front while Romanian army headquarters say Romanian forces under King Ferdinand have occupied several positions held by Austro German allies along the Alt River region. In other front sectors, Romanian forces repelled attacks, except in the Burzen valley where they withdrew slightly south.
Joseph Massarello aged 28 of 126 Congress Street Chelsea was killed at midnight in the North Ferry waiting room in East Boston. The attacker fled and had not been found by early morning.
Hard fighting is reported from the west of Lutsk through Galicia to the Carpathians. In Volhynia the stalemate continues as Austro German and Russian forces clash without a clear victor along the Tarnopol Krasne railway near Lemberg and Stanislau. Small Carpathian gains are claimed by the Austro German side.

The Rev Father Charlier aged 93 and a Jesuit for 638 years is in critical condition at Carney Hospital after fainting at Immaculate Conception Church. He fractured a small bone in his left hip during the incident and has been unconscious since Wednesday morning. He has directed the St Vincent de Paul Society for 50 years and missed Monday’s meeting for the first time in half a century.
Robert J. Bottomly, secretary of the Good Government Association, retires briefly from politics as his wife gives birth to a nine pound two ounce girl named Elizabeth. Both mother and baby are reported doing well.
Witnesses say Massarello waited for a boat, argued with a man in an East Boston public hall. The stranger drew a knife at the ferry house, stabbing Massarello. He died before an ambulance arrived. The attacker, 25, 5 feet 9, 140 pounds, brown suit and checked cap, fled and is being sought by police.
Charles Adamson a 10 year old Weymouth boy and his 12 year old brother confessed to police and led them to a woods cache. They cooperated with officers recovering more than 1000 dollars in stolen property. The brothers were arraigned in Quincy Court and their cases were continued. The younger boy detailed a break in at Walton Market South Weymouth and a near arrest by Patrolman Ford.
Edward Toskowski 31 of Chelsea led Everett police on a lengthy pursuit near the General Electric plant on Tileston street before being tackled by Patrolman Daniel Manning. He faced a charge of attempted theft of 56 pounds of copper coil from his employer.
Ex mayor John F. Fitzgerald remains the Democratic Senate candidate while Douglas is definitively not a candidate. Matthew Hale, Progressive State chair, is open to options but had not heard from Fitzgerald by midnight.
Mr. Fitzgerald hesitates to withdraw from the Senate race amid Democratic leadership uncertainty. Hale and Foss could broker terms, but Fitzgerald has not acted. Chairman O Leary and Mansfield face questions about state committee rights in substituting a candidate. Hale supports President Wilson while Fitzgerald remains a Senate hopeful.
Miss Ida Parker, Brookline’s only police matron, arrested a woman on drunkenness after guiding her quietly to the station. Parker joined the force on Oct 1 and made the quiet, unheralded arrest while walking through the village parkway yesterday afternoon.
An unidentified man rescued from the Charles River by Boston & Maine railroad drawtenders near midnight died minutes after reaching Massachusetts General Hospital. The 32 year old man, 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 165 pounds, wore brown khaki trousers and a white shirt, with no hat coat or shoes.
Mayor Curley disclosed that he initiated the probe into alleged wholesale incendarism tied to the so called arson trust. Boston inquired after sensational revelations linked to the 92 alleged firebugs arrested in the area.
The mayor said a citizen warned of a planned arson at the Hebrew Free School. He hired an investigator, helped by the police and officials, yielding 92 grand jury indictments and fewer fires. The arson trust is alleged to involve about 10 members and up to 2.5 million yearly. District Attorney Pelletier backs the mayor’s role and notes convictions and ongoing trials.
Miss Rose McManus a 38 year old dress maker of 115 Moreland Street Roxbury died last night at City Hospital from gas asphyxiation. Sister Miss Mary F McManus found her unconscious on the couch at 6 pm. Patrolmen Mahoney and Small used a pulmotor without effect. Medical Examiner Leary ruled the death accidental.
