A damaged report describes a near-lynching of a would be assassin in Milwaukee after a failed missile plot. Colonel insists on shaving en route to Chicago as politics discussed with surgeons. Shooter identified as John Schrenk of New York.
New York Oct 14 Mrs Theodore Roosevelt was at a Broadway musical when news broke of an assassination attempt on her husband Colonel Roosevelt in Milwaukee. She left the theatre for the National Progressive committee HQ and awaited further details as reports of his condition varied. President Taft and Governor Wilson were also informed of the incident.
News from the Roosevelt special train shows Colonel Roosevelt refusing surgeons' protests and shaving himself before resting. The train aims for Chicago by morning with a possible 5 to 6 o clock arrival. a bloodied coat and notes with referenced figures and issues were carried in the press car.
The President, after hearing the news and after a silent pause, told newspapermen he was very sorry to learn of the assault on Colonel Roosevelt and was glad no harm was done. Bulletins from Milwaukee later indicated Roosevelt sustained practically no injury.
