The Saint Louis balloon crewed by N. H. Arnold and Harry J. Hewitt lost bearings after overland drift from Schmargendorf. They reportedly sighted lights of an unknown coast last night while competing for an international trophy.
The crew faced a perilous descent to avoid drifting from shipping lanes after their airship Saint Louis was damaged. They lowered a lifeboat amid darkness and waves, were rescued, and a wireless report from Arnold described losing everything in the North Sea. The episode followed prior airship accidents drawing interest in Berlin.

Dr. Daniel Coit Gilman former Johns Hopkins president died suddenly in Norwich today after dinner. Born in Norwich July 6 1831 he studied at Yale 1852 and led UC Berkeley Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Institute. He served on the Venezuela boundary commission and headed the Civil Service Reform League. burial planned in Norwich.
Chester L. Nickerson, 11, was struck by an outbound Boston & Northern car on Main Street and lost his right leg. He was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital where doctors said his condition was critical.
News from Rome reports that the Duke of the Abruzzi has broken his engagement to Miss Katherine Elkins. Reliable sources say the Italian family received a telegram from Turin confirming the breakup. The termination is attributed to the American heiress.

London date Oct 14 The Daily Telegraph Rome correspondent says authorities confirm the marriage between the Duke of the Abruzzi and Miss Elkins will occur very soon.
New York Oct 13 Miss Edna Wallace Hopper testified that a 7500 automobile and a 25000 life insurance policy from A. Q. Brown were given in consideration of her promise to marry him. She said the engagement remains and she intends to wed the bankrupt broker, date unspecified.
Sixty eight children aged 4 to 16 escaped a basement fire at the Episcopalian Home for Orphans and Destitute Children in South Boston. About 50 fled via the fire escape in night clothes while police and citizens carried nearly 20 to safety. Oil lamps were out and rescue was aided by the Phillips Brooks Club offering clothing and medical aid. A five year old boy was found on the third story fire escape almost overcome by smoke.
A rapid fire began in a northeast basement storeroom under the hall on N street, climbing partitions to the second floor and reaching the dormitories where sleeping children were affected by smoke. Miss Sarah Booker entered the building through the N street entrance and escaped as the blaze spread.
Forecast calls for fair and warmer weather in Boston and vicinity on Wednesday and Thursday with fair conditions and increasing south to southeast winds. New England and eastern Newark predict warmer south winds for the midweek period.
