Rev Phillips Brooks urged cordial greetings to the Congregational assembly, while debate argued over Congregationalists' doctrine and unity with Unitarians. A substitute favoring “Congregational brethren” passed 162 to 112, before discussion moved to the name change issue and adjourned.
