Fall of a building kills and buries eight on Market Street

A building under construction on Market Street in Louisville collapsed at about 7 PM, burying the Notte family and a journeyman. six died at once with another dying later, five fatalities total, plus three children rescued but injured. Architect and contractor arrested for murder. building assessed as shoddily mortared. Authorities plan tearing down the property amid public demand for accountability and possible building inspections. The loss is estimated at $50,000.

Revolt in Ferrol as Spanish Cortes Open Session

Madrid reports a Republican uprising at Ferrol led by Montijo and Rajas. About 1500 garrison and coast guard members joined, insurgents seized gun boats and the lighthouse, closing the harbor. Government troops hold the fortress, fight planned with reinforcements. Cadiz steamer and other craft seized, fortifications hold, loyal officers remaining at duty.

Prince Napoleon Expelled From Paris By Government Order

Paris reports that Prince Napoleon left the capital after officials ordered him to Switzerland. The Princess Clothilde accompanied him. Also noted is a draft postal treaty between the United States and France setting eight cent letter rate and three cent charges for registered letters and newspapers. Rumors say Thiers pressed Victor Emmanuel to recall Chevalier Nigra, the Italian minister, as a Bonapartist.

San Juan boundary decision eyed as US favor

London dispatch reports Berlin sources expect Emperor William to rule in favor of the United States on the San Juan boundary. Telegraph notes the Times praising Seward as a useful statesman. Weather and market briefs follow with storms, bans on Louis Blanc lectures, and mixed bond and cotton quotes from London and Liverpool.

Mexico President addresses Congress amid unrest at Minatitlan

In an address to Congress the President spoke of satisfactory foreign affairs and upcoming economic reforms. Epidemic fever sweeps the country as 20 soldiers killed seven deserters at Puebla and were executed. Disturbances at Minatitlan continue with a burned town and executions. MATAMORAS reports presidential electors cast votes with no opposition to Lerdo de Tejada as electors meet in November.

Amherst fire devastates multiple downtown stores in Nova Scotia

In Amherst Nova Scotia last night a major fire destroyed Douglass and Harper’s store and two more Douglass properties, plus William Greenfield’s grocers, Chapman and Etter goods, and E C Newberry. Five buildings burned, Halifax and Royal insured losses total 9000. Portmouth fires and Colorado mine losses follow in brief notices.

Westphalia emigrant Anton Beder pursued thief James Martin to Pavonia Ferry Jersey City where a struggle left Beder stabbed and gravely wounded. In Cape May yacht race the Dreadnaught won the New York Club challenge cup completing 240 miles.

Riot in Covington During Grant Procession

In Covington last night a Grant procession of mixed race composition marched when a boy hailed for Greeley. A negro allegedly fired and began shooting or fired into the air. Although many shots were fired no one was hit, but bystanders and doors were struck by torches. two stores suffered broken windows.
