Long labor dispute ends with full award in notable Hatters case
After four hours of deliberation the jury awarded the plaintiffs the full amount sought in the nine year case against 240 United Hatters members in the state. The suit began in 1902 alleging a conspiracy to ruin the plaintiff’s soft hat business by boycott. the American Federation of Labor backed the defendants while the Anti Boycott Society of America supported the plaintiffs. The trial featured testimony from AFL leaders and labor figures denying any boycott. Judge James W. Martin explained federal jurisdiction under the Sherman act and anti trust laws, outlining that individual members’ actions, not unions as whole, could justify damages if a nationwide boycott was proven. The current trial started August 2% with appeals already twice to the federal courts and once to the Supreme Court.
