Ambitious vocal students are invited tonight at Steinert Hall for the Mme Nordica musical scholarship offering the winner a full course of vocal study at a premier New York school. Many Boston women expected to compete, but no entrants from the New England Conservatory. The Conservatory recalls Mme Nordica trained there and its faculty and pupils view the award with surprise and disapproval.
Bordens Eagle Brand condensed milk repeats its Paris Exposition triumph and is awarded first prize gold medal at the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo over all competitors.

Two more carloads of suits and overcoats arrived for cash undercutting prices to bout $0.33 on the dollar with a $12 suit down to $3.89 and other bargains. Open after 9 a m with car fare paid for out of town buyers and mail orders honored with returns if unsatisfactory.
The three mile match race between Tom Williams of Somerville and George Tindler the crack Irish runner will be decided at Tufts oval this noon. The race will be called at 4 o'clock.
Charles W. Gibson, an 18 year old express wagon driver, was discharged without hearing after claiming he fired four shots to protect himself from attackers in the South Cove area during an expressmen strike. Judge Adams ruled the shooting justified, noting Gibson believed his life was in danger and expressing no leniency for mob violence. Senator Fitzgerald argued the South Cove remains unsafe, but the judge maintained there are respectable citizens there. The Boston & New York Dispatch Company had defended Gibson and paid for his counsel.
Local reaction follows acquittal of young Gibson as Senator Fitzgerald and Rev. W P McQuade condemn the judges remarks about South Cove residents. Fitzgerald says he resented the insinuation in open court and McQuade defends the district noting depots and hostelries but affirming residents’ safety and decency. Boston October 11 clergy appeal again seeks funds to rescue Miss Ellen M Stone American missionary held by Balkan brigands at a ransom of 110000. Nearly half remains to be raised and private reports warn the full amount must come at once. Funds go to Kidder Peabody Boston and Baring Magoun New York with returns if not needed.
In line with a Washington request, Ottoman forces have halted the pursuit of those who abducted the American missionary Miss Stone. The report notes the action followed Ottawa concerns and indicates continuation on another page.
