New Bedford celebrates the fiftieth anniversary of its incorporation with a mammoth tent structure and a crowded exposition building. The tent, 46000 square feet, with panels anchored by expert canvasmen, with Reiter's and Hill's bands performing at 9 PM in the exposition hall amid the displays of local establishments.
A wind gust and torn tent caused a partial collapse at the New Bedford industrial exposition. Police quickly cleared occupants as the canvas fell onto seats. repairs were underway for the next day. The event opened with a 50 gun salute and a Washington button ceremony by President McKinley.
