A major blaze in Worcester on Fremont Street wrecked the Worcester Bleach and Dyeing Works. The fire, likely sparked by a locomotive, caused an estimated loss between 50 000 and 60 000 dollars and prompted two alarms to sound.
Louis Weinberg owner accuses contractor Joseph Adolph of the fatal remodeling collapse at Hanover and Battery streets. Three men died and one was seriously injured when a cast iron post failed under defective foundations. The deceased include Adolph, Mazur, and Tracy. Samuel Schwartz was seriously hurt.
Matthew Carlyle of A Troop Tenth Cavalry fired in a frenzy after arrest for failure to report, killing Andrew Fox and Clara Washington and fatally wounding Beatrice Stewart in a shared Burlington house. He was captured after troops used stealthy Indian-tactics to corner him and a bullet wounded him in the groin.
Carlyle, armed with a high power army rifle and a belt of ammunition, faced Captain Suplee s detachment for nearly half an hour near Fort Ethan Allen in Burlington. He wounded Captain F H Godson of L troop and then surrendered. Residents feared the Tenth Cavalry s arrival and the clash echoed through the town, with shooting heard for a mile and two reported injuries.
