Seward Dies in Auburn After Sudden Illness

Hon. William H. Seward died at 3 15 this afternoon at his Auburn residence after lung effusion. He was moved to his study to die among books and papers, surrounded by relatives and attendants, breathing his last in calm, affectionate leave taking. Profound regrets spread from New York to Albany and across the state.

France and Gambetta dominate Permanent Commission meeting

Paris October meeting of the Permanent Commission of the Assembly heard Thiers condemn Gambetta and pilgrim assaults, while Thiers remained with the Republic. Rumors of Bonapartist plots circulated by Soir, but Paris stayed quiet. Executions of two Communists Robicon and Rand completed the day’s events.

Liberal gains and party victories across states

Indiana leans Liberal with an estimated 2500 majority from 57 counties. Hendricks leads by about 1000, with Voorhees defeated and Nef defeating Shanks in Congress. Pennsylvania shows Republican majorities around 23,000 to 26,000. House 23 Republicans 4 Democrats. Senate 18 Republicans 15 Democrats. Philadelphia reports 118,000 votes with Wartraint at 20,437 and Congress at large 21,919. Speer wins in Seventeenth District by 500.

Cordial reception to liberal presidential candidate in Baltimore

Horace Greeley spoke at the Maryland State Agricultural and Mechanical Society Fair Grounds addressing land improvement and national reconciliation. About 12,000 people attended a torchlight procession by Democratic Clubs. He urged unity and peace, pledging to never have citizens treated as enemies. He left for New York on tonight’s 11 o clock train.

Destructive Fire Destroys Much of Sing-Sing Business District

Dense blaze at Sing-Sing N Y last night consumed twenty seven stores in Main street and Patterson's brick row. Losses exceed two hundred fifty thousand dollars with many insured. Fire started in Francis Larkin row as two people were badly burned. No prison damage. In New York City Fulton street building also damaged about five thousand dollars.

Farmers Convention backs state farm experiments program

In Skowhegan Maine on October 10 the Farmers Convention urged cooperation with the State College of Agriculture to set up a statewide system of farm experiments.
