Motives and motives for women's conduct debated

A caustic examination of female motives questions public trust in explanations for marriage, widow remarriage, veering to singleness, and illness excuses. The piece rails at pretexts while noting Leutze's Battle of Monmouth exhibit in New York and the Düsseldorf work completed for Brooklyn patron David Leavitt at $10,000.

Not in the cradle bed thy quiet rest with angels

A lament over a child’s death praises the child as a pure, heavenly presence. The speaker sees the child as a waxen, serene face, sanctified in heaven, and expresses reconcilement with the loss, comparing the departed to a dove safe with the Everlasting One.
