Allied forces push from Cambrai toward St. Quentin as German troops retreat five miles. Intense combat leaves both sides battered with heavy casualties and renewed pressure on the central front.
The president demands German retirement from all invaded territory before engaging on peace terms. He asks whether Germany has accepted the American terms in full or only wishes to discuss them and questions who stands behind the chancellor.
British American and French troops advance along a 20 mile front between mbrai and St Quentin driving the enemy from prized positions to a depth of two to five miles in a decisive stage of the drive. Continued on Page 4-Sixth Column.
The National War Labor Board announced that when organized labor opposes higher street car fares tied to wage increases for public utility workers, the entire award including the wage gains will be suspended. The letter to John R. Alpine notes New Orleans unions planned to oppose the fare increases after a 70 percent wage rise for conductors and motormen.
The Malden city government voted to buy an immense 2780 square foot burial lot in Forest Dale Cemetery for American soldiers and sailors who die serving the country. An appropriation of 1365 was approved for perpetual care, with plans to establish the lot to be executed at once.

Widespread distribution of the Timothy J Leary anti influenza serum is planned after two scientific groups reported favorable findings. Health Commissioner Eugene R Kelley announced the plan following receipt of their examinations and results. Continued on page four.
Urgent call urges nurses and aides to volunteer for government service amid a fast spreading influenza epidemic. Physicians are asked to release noncritical staff and chronically ill patients to free nurses for frontline care. Telegraph names, addresses, and availabilities to local Red Cross chapters or national headquarters.

Paris reports Lieutenant Stafford Brown of Newton Mass died after his monoplane fell over a village near Mantes in France. Brown engaged with three Newton friends in aviation service. two comrades had been killed and another, William A Wellman, decorated for bravery. Brown aged 23 in 1915 Newton High School graduate.
Washington Oct 8 Republicans react to President Wilson noting inquiry to Germany. Senator Lodge and Representative Fess voiced disappointment at the stance, fearing impact on the Army as the proposal for withdrawal is deemed unfortunate.
Senator Lodge said he was keenly disappointed that the President would at this stage discuss policy with the imperial German government. He urged a firmer stance and cautioned against premature moves that could weaken the war effort.
Forecast for Boston and vicinity calls for fair skies with slowly rising temperatures through Wednesday and Thursday. Northern New England expected fair and warmer, with southern New England also fair and warming. Eastern New York should be fair and gradually rising temperatures with light winds. The cyclonic low mood moving from New England is clearing to sea.
