A massive fire in Beaumont Texas sweeps the Hogg Swayne oil field burning 60 derricks and threatening tanks. Early reports put fatalities at around 12 rising to about 20 with 100 structures still burning and tens of thousands in property damage.
Lee Go a Chinese man of 2 Oxford Place lies at City Hospital in a critical state with his throat cut from ear to ear. Police report says selfinflicted injury amid illness and poverty but Chinatown whispers of a highbinder vendetta and an organized gang in the area.
Philadelphia reports that coal barons may settle the strike as manufacturers committee plans to meet operators tomorrow after a Buffalo conference with John Mitchell. Miners appear more determined, while troops called by operators fail to sway them.
Joseph M. Lipman, a longtime Manchester resident and collector for the North Shore Lodge AOW, was attacked as he entered the Town Hall for a North Shore Lodge meeting. He was left unconscious after blows to the head and face. $218 and papers were stolen. State Officer Neal from Lynn investigated after 10:30 p.m.
George Gould of Liverpool second steward on the Hanoverian was accidentally shot and killed by William Hughes second steward of the Devonian. The shooting happened in John Dawson & Co. office at 6 Green Street during a gathering after being passed a revolver as a souvenir. Gould died minutes later at the Relief station. Hughes, deeply remorseful, is held for investigation. Gould leaves a widow and young daughter.

At Haverhill First Presbyterian Church the Boston Presbytery opened its fall session with news that charges against Rev. Scott F. Hershey D D of Boston were not sustained after an executive review. Hershey submitted his resignation and the presbytery selected Rev. John L. Withrow as moderator replacing Rev. W H Power.
Governor Crane and the executive council toured the Foxboro institution and praised the improved condition under new management. They reported better overall state of the building and patient care with inmates having no complaints.

Buffalo October 7. Mr. Mitchell refused to discuss urging miners to resume work in exchange for a promised commission to probe grievances. A reliable source says he does not favor the proposal and will not ask miners to return under those terms.
The White House released that on October 6 Carroll Wright delivered to John Mitchell a message from President Roosevelt urging immediate miners' return to work in the anthracite regions. The President would appoint a commission to investigate issues and seek settlement per the commission's report. Mitchell was considering the proposal as Roosevelt discussed the strike with Cabinet members and aides.
A National Manufacturers' Association committee met President Mitchell in Buffalo and planned to meet mine operators in Philadelphia to hear their side of the anthracite strike. No agreement, but progress and telephonic contact marked the sessions as leaders from Parry Barbour Young Leake Maxwell and Mitchell Wilson Nichols Duffy Fahey attended.
