William James’s essay on Reflex Action and Theism draws praise and Crawford Toy gains prominence in Hebrew studies. Friday’s papers promise a discussion of Communism and wealth and public welfare by Newton and Atkinson.
President Garfield's body was moved to a sheet bronze casket with gold trimmings after a September 29 letter from the Union League and New York citizens. Mrs. Garfield and Dr. Robison witnessed the transfer, and a gold plate will be added. The plan may shift to a crypt exposure instead of burial.

An executive committee led by K. Manley, George Weed, and Rev Saunders will set next session’s place and arrangements.

The eighth annual meeting of the New Hampshire branch opened in HaNoVer with about 100 delegates from New England. The body endorsed Judges Clark Dickinson and Mitchell for the supreme bench.
At North Abington a Hanover branch engine detached from a train escaped on a siding after a steam pipe broke. It sped toward the Old Colony line and struck the South Weymouth depot tram from Boston. Engineer Mc Laughlin and the fireman fled as the engines and baggage car were badly smashed. Mc Laughlin injured.

Between 10 and 11 pm at Owen Stankard's Market Street home Lowell Massachusetts a stabbing occurred during a quarrel with son in law John Behan. Behan was stabbed in the abdomen with a pocket knife and his entrails protruded. Behan was taken to St John’s Hospital. Stankard was arrested. Drunkenness is blamed.

Miss Mary Wait weds Mr James H Welles at Park Church Norwich. guests include Chief Justice Waite and Gov Bigelow.
A cave in at Pearson's mine in Allentown Pa killed Frank Kramer and Joseph George. A Quebec grand jury returned true bills for libel against Hon Wilfred Laurier and C E Gagnon. Annapolis cadet midshipmen confined for hazing have pledged not to haze and were released. In Lancaster Pa Edward Sanders and Philip Rogers assaulted Mrs Mary Seymour. she died from injuries after Sanders pursued and knocked her down.
