A platform committee rejected the Hall Fossa reciprocity plank. The group demands free list status for hides coal iron ore lumber and wood pulp and asks for across the board duty reductions on manufactured goods where protections are excessive.
The platform committee adopts a stand pat plank affirming protection remains while tariff rates may change when public interest requires. It calls for revisions to be determined by party representatives and approves actions taken by their congressional members.
Kate Mayo Highman of Lowell claims the victim in the suitcase case is May Ella Kelley a young friend who died after surgery and was dismembered then sunk in Winthrop water. Police doubt her assertions and note her records and sanity. The search for the missing doctor and his assistant continues as investigators probe the case.
Chicago authorities report Henry Hoffman and Mrs. Henry Schiller, both with many aliases, captured on smuggling charges. They are accused of ties to London and New York burglaries and confess to robbing Isaac F. Lloyd’s home of about 30 000 dollars in valuables. About 270 diamonds seized. Schiller reportedly taking the blame to clear Hoffman.
Freight Engine 400 of the Boston and Maine railroad and its tender plunged into the Charles River at 7 45 last evening after failing to clear an open draw. Engineer Frost and Fireman Ryan survived by leaping to safety aided by car inspector Frank Lawrence who warned them. Eyewitnesses blamed signal neglect while the draw tender declined comment. The Onward tug, pushing an oil barge, narrowly avoided collision as the engine sank and exploded, with pieces scattered and crew drenched. No lifting of the wreck will occur until traffic slows Sunday.
