A Boston to New York express runs off track near Westport Connecticut, eight women die and about forty are injured as Pullman cars burn. Telegraph poles are knocked down and wires severed. Several New England residents are named among the injured, with some victims unidentified.
Washington October 3 Ex President Theodore Roosevelt to testify before the Senate campaign contributions committee tomorrow about his role in raising funds that aided his presidential rise. He will also be asked to clarify Harriman involvement in the fund.
An investigation concludes the New Haven wreck resulted from the engineer taking the cross over at high speed and ignoring a danger signal set at the junction. The report cites excessive speed and signal violation as primary causes.
The dead include Mrs E P Garvin daughter of Anthony M Brady and Miss Mary Hamilton among others returning from a funeral in Hartford. Injured listed include O L Wade Indianapolis ribs broken James Apts bruised head Mrs James Garfield arm broken and many more treated at Norwalk and other hospitals.
A witness recalls robbers pressuring for money and taking whatever they could. Mr. Cortelyou asks about the amount sought, but the response indicates no specific figure. the speaker notes his occupation vanished after the plunder.

The 12 o'clock Boston to New York train wrecked at the Westport cross over around 4:45 p m. Ten cars derailed with the engine and baggage car derailing and catching fire in places. All passengers escaped except those in the first parlor car. The westbound track was badly damaged while the eastbound tracks remained clear. Officials from Connecticut Public Utilities Commission and railroad superintendents left for the scene to investigate the cause. The Interstate Commerce Commission was notified.
Tristram Speaker of the Red Sox and Larry Doyle of the Giants won the Chalmers automobile trophy in a ballot announced by Ben Mulford Jr. The decision shocked many as Frank Schulte and Ty Cobb failed to place near the top, with Cobb finishing eighth.
Voting followed the 1911 method with a commission of newspaper men from each city in the two leagues. Prizes will be presented during the world series in Boston or New York by Hugh Chalmers of Detroit, donor of the automobiles.
Westport Conn Oct 3 Eight killed and about 40 injured when the Springfield line express from Boston jumped the track just west of Westport station. The locomotive derailed at high speed as it failed to follow rails in a crossover. Among the dead were four women and three men employees other victims include prominent figures Mrs E P Garvan and Miss Mary Hamilton. A mail clerk died after hospital treatment.
Lawrence citizens gathered under Mayor Scanlon and the City Council to back a large Oct 12 event titled For God and country. The rally aims to rebuke the I WW parade with red flags and emphasize Old Glory.
After a city meeting leading men marched in a parade, carrying national emblems and signaling respect or potential provocation as they passed along downtown streets. The city tonight presented a sea of flags.
