Public hearing on Pennsylvania tunnel franchise draws crowd
In New York Oct 2 a large audience attended a hearing on the Pennsylvania railroad tunnel franchise. Adolph Bloch for 26 property owners urged protest while labor leaders pressed for a minimum wage eight hour law and citizen hiring. Abram Hewitt and the Chamber of Commerce urged avoidance of labor price controls, arguing the tunnel would cost 50 million over years and could stall the work. Merchants and Long Island Railway officials defended the franchise, saying union labor would be used but clauses demanding labor regulation were impractical illegal. Crimmins appealed for restraint to avoid halting a major public project.
