Springfield district miners 1500 strong strike for wage increase from 55 to 67 cents per ton. Petersburg miners also strike with Barclay and Dawson expected to join. If Columbus scale not granted, general stoppage feared. Also bicycle road race Boston to Chicago canceled.
London October 2 a mass meeting at Tower Hill drew about 10000 with police seizing placards and demanding promoter names. Six platforms heard speeches condemning government policy and Mitchelstown police conduct while resolutions backed Gladstone and Ireland justice. A separate Liberal rally at Templecombe Somerset attracted about 20000 with John Morley denying unclear Gladstonian positions and urging Irish and English reform.
News from Boma reports Stanley pushing forward along the upper Congo with only natural country obstacles as opposition. Reports indicate continued progress and no significant resistance encountered during the advance.

In Washington on October 2 Rev John P Newman denounced Anarchists in a sermon on Infidelity. He asked if any citizen could have imagined a petition to pardon traitors whose hands are red with blood. The crowd rose and applauded the minister’s harsh remarks.
The revenue cutter Bear returned from Alaska with Frank Fuller in custody for Archbishop Seghers’ murder. On arrival she seized the British sealing schooner Ada with 1900 skins and the American schooner Allie I Alger with 1600 skins. The Handy carrying 1700 skins was also seized. Passenger James B. Vincent, survivor of the Napoleon wreck, had ridden out with a Siberian Indian band before rescue.
Early today the dead body of Frances Hawkins a wealthy widow was found in the woods north of Islip village. Wounds on the head and the report of the body show she was murdered and robbed by unknown assailants.
Springfield, Oct. 2 Henry W Bishop a Berkshire county native and leading Chicago lawyer proposes to erect and equip at a cost of not less than 25000 a training school for nurses in connection with the Pittfield House of Mercy He does this as a memorial of his son who died about two years ago while attending Williams College.
Ships and barks arrive at various ports including New York and Liverpool with steamers, schooners, brigs, and ships named Algiers Galveston Nacoochee Savanneah Herman Winter and others sailing for New York Boston New Orleans and Europe. Multiple vessels depart from Liverpool Queenstown Stettin and London for transatlantic routes.
Bennie F Wheldon a 10 year old boy fell into a cold air duct in the steeple of Trinity Church Saturday afternoon and was found this forenoon in the cellar not much the worse for his fall. The shaft opens above the bell and connects at the base in the cellar with the furnaces cold air boxes.
William Russell Sever of Harvard College and Plymouth’s oldest male resident died yesterday at age 96. Born Kingston Massachusetts May 30 1791 he studied law after Harvard and was treasurer of Plymouth County from 1834 to 1876. He never married and his funeral will be held at his residence Wednesday at 11 o'clock.
Ex lieutenant governor and 1857 governor Horace Holley died at his Lakeville residence aged 83. A Salisbury businessman and founder of Holley Manufacturing Co, he was connected to early iron cannon casting in the town. His relatives include lawyer Orville L Holley and engineer Alexander L Holley, who helped introduce the Bessemer process in America.
August Stoepel, a famed musician who led orchestras in New York and London, died Saturday morning in New York. Born 1821 in Berlin, he studied at the Berlin Conservatory and Paris Conservatoire, worked with Wallack's theatre, Daly, and Irving. He sued Irving over unpaid music, won $2,000, later faced deafness, retired, and left about $30,000 in an annuity. Burial is planned for Tuesday from the Little Church Around the Corner.
