The Bartow National bank filed a petition in the court of insolvency at St. Albans seeking adjudication of Bradley Barlow as bankrupt with a hearing set for October 19. The bank claims 11 000 dollars against Barlow. In a separate libel suit in Franklin county court Tarble versus Tobin the jury awarded five dollars to Tarble for character damage plus costs. The Windham County Reformer estimates state railroads will pay about 96 000 to 97 000 in taxes this year, far above last year’s 29 549, with insurance companies taxed about 15 000 and express and telegraph firms 1 500 each, while many interests previously untaxed may contribute between 90 000 and 1 000 000.

In New Haven on October 2, Judge Beardsley granted Minnie Somers former Veck custody of her four year old son in a habeas corpus case. The petition claimed the paternal grandparents had imprisoned the child for three weeks, denying the mother possession contrary to the divorce ruling. The court annulled the prior order and awarded the mother custody with the grandparents allowed 24 hours of visitation each week.
Mrs Bailey 45 and her daughter 16 were found dead in a cornfield near Monmouth Iowa. A note on the mother shows she killed her daughter with a razor and then took her own life with the same weapon. The daughter had been demented since birth and the mother had recently brooded over her daughter's condition.
Isoma a 20 year old Indian on the Sanboir river in Indian territory was tortured by four men to learn the location of money in his home. After he remained silent the robbers shot him several times and beat him until insensible. They plundered the hat and carried at least $5,000. Isoma is expected to die and no clue to the attackers exists.
The fifty-ninth annual Rhode Island Baptist state convention opened at First Baptist in Bristol with Rev. Jonathan Brayton acting as president in Dr. Bullen’s Europe-based absence. The body re-elected the president, noted aid to 17 churches, and approved funding the state missionary. Treasurer’s report showed 7063.70 in receipts and 7073.32 in expenditures.
Hartford dispatch notes slow returns from small towns as 142 towns report. Republicans lead with 78 to 42 for Democrats and 18 split. In Leavenworth a severe storm blew down a house injuring Mrs. Michael Marshall. Another home belonging to Charles Pike collapsed, killing his 3-year-old son. At Arrington Springs Beckett & Son store was destroyed. both father and son were injured, the latter fatally.
Charles Mitchell and William Sheriff alias the Prussian fought six rounds on Long Island for 1000 a side. Spectators paid 10 each and demanded a rematch but the referee ruled the match a draw. Both boxers left unmarked aside from a slight swelling on Sheriff’s face.

New York Oct 2 Henry D Garrett a Jersey City lawyer was arrested this afternoon charged with forging seven checks totaling 1700 dollars. The checks were cashed by local tradesmen. Garrett an adopted son of a wealthy Jersey City plasterer and vice president of the McGill University Alumni Association Montreal is held for examination.

Auditors in the Dexter Savings Bank versus J Wilson Barron estate case report a balance due of 201,138 dollars including interest.
