Banks urged to extend discounts at Boston meeting

A large Boston merchants meeting urged banks to increase discounts and suspend specie payments if needed to aid solvent merchants. Speakers warned the crisis is deepening, with calls to unite on resolutions, but some opposed suspension. The adjourned gathering backed a plan to press bank directors to act as a unit to sustain commerce.

Buffalo robe auctions end in fiasco in Boston

Correspondence from the Boston Post reports three large buffalo robe sales in New York on Oct 1 1867 failed for account of P Chateau Jr Co Cronin Hurxthal Sears and Ramsay Crooks. The firms backed out or paused after partial sales while attendees were misled seeking unrestricted sales and large profits.

Deer hunt on Naushon island yields few bucks this fall

The New Bedford Mercury reports the Naushon deer hunt produced only one buck shot this season, by Judge Curt of the supreme court. Severe winter conditions reduced the antlered herd, with several skeletons found on the island. Naushon, in Vineyard Sound off Massachusetts, is preserved for deer and game birds and owned by New Bedford gentlemen who lease it for shooting.

East Boston Democrats Open HQ at Winthrop Block

The democrats of East Boston announce headquarters are open in a room at Winthrop Block with entrance on Maverick square. The room will be open every evening and voters favoring Beach and Currier are invited to assemble there per order of the Ward Committee.
