New Coin Designs Promote Better Looking Frac tionals

Washington Sept 30 The Philadelphia mint is testing new half and quarter dollar designs under Director Leech supervision to replace the current art with simpler liberty heads and a standard eagle on the reverse for better durability. The law limits devices and words, and a more refined, small relief will be pursued to avoid wear, with dimes retaining the eagle on the reverse. Meanwhile federal finances show a large cash balance but current receipts barely cover expenditures, with high pensions and new congressionally authorized spends looming.

The Irish Mackerel Industry Pails in Ireland

Reports from Bere Haven and southwest Ireland indicate a complete breakdown of the mackerel curing industry. Established recently, it boosted about 3000 fishermen with roughly $50 annually each, a godsend to the poor. The failure stems from bad packing and curing, blamed on insufficient technical education. The Freeman's Journal urges government action to save the industry before it is too late.
