Gen George P Meserve longtime northern New Hampshire resident died at his Jackson home on September 19 aged 86. A grandson of Capt Jonathan Meserve of the British army and son of Col Jonathan Meserve he served in state militia rising to major general at 26. He influenced local affairs and land settlement including Thompson and Meserve’s purchase atop Mt Washington. Survived by his wife Harriet Eastman and a large family others include Matthew Howland of New Bedford, John F Stockbridge of Melvin Village and George Thayer of Milford.

A Tuesday meeting at the Naval Library and Institute at the navy yard voted not to accept A. M. Massie’s resignation and expelled him. Dr. Henry Lyon presided as the commandant submitted that Massie insulted visitors, forced purchases, refused to surrender the key, and blacklisted him. Capt. Bunce and others set up an accounts committee with Commander Kautz named temporary curator and librarian before adjournment.
