Ex Senator McDonald for the Presidency Emerges
Henry Watterson of the Louisville Courier-Journal weighs McDonald as the West and South’s choice for the Democratic nomination. He cites McDonald’s war record, fiscal steadiness, statesmanlike experience, and cross-region support, predicting near-certain southern and western backing and possible acclamation if convened tomorrow. Watterson also downplays Holman and outlines Speakership prospects between Carlisle and Randall. The pair plan Hudson visit and a Cooper Union lecture on Revenue Reform.

Speed gauge for railroads inches toward standard locomotive device
Mr E R E Cowell of Detroit has invented a glass oil gauge showing actual engine speed in the cab. A connected glass tube with oil and a driven wheel conveys speed via flexible shafting from the locomotive wheel. He also devised an electrical mileage and speed indicator tested on the Michigan Central. The gauge, he says, is as essential as a steam gauge for future locomotives.
