A massive blizzard paralyses Boston with eleven inches of snow and severe tides flooding docks and streets. Winds up to 80 mph topple steeples, halt ferries, cut power, and leave the harbor in chaos as residents face isolation and damaged commerce.
In South Berwick two railroad workers, Harley Bates an engineer and Fred Hallway a fireman on the Boston & Maine, were killed when their engine derailed during a heavy storm. Across New England, railroads faced washouts and delays as coastlines battered by seas and snow caused widespread service disruption from Bangor to New York.
In South Berwick Maine on November 27 Harvey Bates aged 64 and Fred Stallway 82, both Portland residents, were killed while acting on Engine 12 of the Boston and Maine Western division. The locomotive had been clearing heavy overnight snow toward Exeter when the plow operator and crew encountered trouble near Hobbs. The incident happened after a 1 14 PM stop at North Berwick.
A snowbound two mile derailment near South Berwick crushed Engineer Bates and Wireman Hallway as the plow overturned and the locomotive was thrown into an embankment. Bates died, Hallway likely perished. both men left families. Rescue crews from Portland worked as tracks remained blocked until tomorrow.
The Providence division of the railroad fared unusually well in the storm with tracks kept passable. Giant drifts covered sections, but snow ploughs cleared them swiftly, avoiding a total tie-up. Train despatchers reported “All clear to Providence” as operations continued.
Superintendent of Streets Wells organized 300 men and 100 teams to clear snow after an unexpected storm. The wind piled drifts swiftly, halting traffic on electric car tracks and leaving city streets in dangerous condition. The effort began early and continued as crews worked through the morning.
